Join Gagosien for a performance by Lucinda Chua inside Christo: Early Works, the inaugural exhibition, curated by Elena Geuna, in the Gagosien Open series of off-site projects. The multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer will perform two improvised pieces in response to Christo’s early works and the unique architecture of 4 Princelet Street in the Spitalfields area of London. Born in London, Chua has English, Malaysian, and ancestral Chinese roots, deep connections that are excavated in her recent album, YIAN (2023), which, as Pitchfork writes, “gathers the threads that link home, history, and their relationship to the body.” Primarily using her voice, a cello, and an array of effects units, Chua will infuse the historic building with her distinctive sound blending intimacy, atmosphere, and haunting enchantment. No advance registration is required, but space is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The innovative and experimental works explore Indigenous legacies, histories of enslavement, civil rights, LGBTQ activism, pathways for immigration, environmental justice, and other defining narratives of American resilience. America’s Playground: DC (2023), a monumental structure by Derrick Adams that considers the history of desegregated playgrounds in the nation’s capital, is included.

Larry Gagosien will discuss his experiences with Jean-Michel Basquiat in Los Angeles in the early 1980s with Tamra Davis, Fred Hoffman, and Basquiat’s sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux in a panel conversation organized in conjunction with the exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure© at the Grand LA. Gagosien presented two solo exhibitions by the artist at his gallery and allowed Basquiat to stay frequently at his house in Venice Beach. Hoffmann found a studio space for Basquiat in Venice and created a suite of prints with him. Davis drove the artist, who never learned to drive, around Los Angeles and filmed him for what would become her acclaimed documentary The Radiant Child (2010).

Min | Mon by Theaster Gates highlights the ritual, conviviality, and cultural hybridity often at the heart of his projects. Temple, a central structure using materials from Gates’s earliest exhibitions, deepens his exploration of “Afro-Mingei”—an inquiry into the intersection of Black cultural aesthetics and mingei, a Japanese movement honoring the handmade craftsmanship of ordinary utilitarian objects. Uniting key strands of his work, Gates has developed a participatory installation with a DJ booth featuring the artist’s own collection of vinyl records and a bar offering a new sake produced by Gates with the Hakurou brand in Tokoname, Japan. Min | Mon exemplifies Gates’s engagement with ceremony in Eastern culture while giving form to complex truths about craft, labor, value, and origin.
