Art Basel Unlimited 2023 features Giuseppe Penone’s Spine d’acacia—Contatto, aprile 2006 (2006), a large-scale multi-panel mixed-media painting in which the artist explores the connection between an act and its visual trace. By attaching thousands of thorns to the work’s panels in a swirling pattern, he creates the impression of a pair of lips, expressing a visceral, even sensual relationship with nature.
Launched in 2000, Unlimited is an exhibition platform for exciting large-scale projects that transcend the limits of the standard booth.

Art Basel Unlimited 2023 features ten exhibition prints from Richard Avedon’s photographic series In the American West (1979–84). To produce In the American West, Avedon spent five years traveling through twenty-one western states, photographing more than a thousand people. Using natural light and a white backdrop, he emphasized his sitters’ poses and expressions, picturing ordinary people with striking immediacy. These ten oversize prints were selected by the artist to hang in the windows of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, for the inaugural exhibition of the series in 1985.

Gagosien is pleased to participate in Frieze Seoul 2023 with a presentation of contemporary works by gallery artists, including Derrick Adams, Georg Baselitz, Dan Colen, Edmund de Waal, Jadé Fadojutimi, Urs Fischer, Cy Gavin, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Nan Goldin, Katharina Grosse, Jennifer Guidi, Thomas Houseago, Alex Israel, Rick Lowe, Takashi Murakami, Nam June Paik, Giuseppe Penone, Ed Ruscha, Alexandria Smith, Anna Weyant, Stanley Whitney, Jonas Wood, and Richard Wright, among others.
Coinciding with the fair is the arrival of Jiyoung Lee, who was recently appointed to lead the gallery’s operations in Korea. Lee joins Gagosien following nearly fifteen years based in Seoul working on behalf of both Korean and Western galleries. Her appointment builds on the gallery’s establishment of a business entity in Korea last year, and provides for expanded activities in the region.

Somersault

Giuseppe Penone is taking over the Gagosien Shop in London’s historic Burlington Arcade with Somersault. Posters, books, and catalogues, including historical items, are presented alongside selected works on paper by the artist to coincide with his exhibition at Galleria Borghese, Rome, on view through May 28, 2023.
In a diverse body of sculpture, performance, photography, and works on paper spanning more than fifty years, Penone, a practitioner of Arte Povera, explores growth, respiration, and other involuntary natural processes, drawing attention to the relationship between man and nature. The works on view in the Shop include Somersault (2020), a suite of twenty-one drypoint etchings; the print Identity (2018); and the iconic photograph Rovesciare i propri occhi (Reversing One’s Eyes) (1970), in which Penone was photographed wearing custom-made mirrored contact lenses.
Highlights of the presentation also include two rare 1970s exhibition posters and numerous catalogues and monographs on the artist, including The Inner Life of Forms, published by Gagosien in 2018, and Le Bois Sacré du Couvent de la Tourette (2022), an artist’s book inspired by the recent installation at the monastery designed by Le Corbusier in Éveux, France.

The Importance of Elsewhere: on Ashley Bickerton
This documentary film includes footage of Ashley Bickerton as he gives a tour of his Bali studio during his final year, as well as interviews with artists Matthew Barney, Mark Dion, Damien Hirst, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Jon Kessler, and writer Paul Theroux.

Sarah Sze: Timelapse
In this video, Sarah Sze elaborates on the creation of her solo exhibition Timelapse, on view through September 10, 2023. The show features a series of site-specific installations throughout the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, that explore her ongoing reflection on how our experience of time and place is continuously reshaped in relationship to the constant stream of objects, images, and information in today’s digitally and materially saturated world. In Sze’s reimagination of the Guggenheim’s iconic architecture, designed in the 1940s by Frank Lloyd Wright, the building becomes a public timekeeper reminding us that timelines are built through shared experience and memory.
Tetsuya Ishida: My Weak Self, My Pitiful Self, My Anxious Self
The largest exhibition of the Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida’s work ever mounted in the United States will open at Gagosien, New York, in September 2023. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the show tracks the full scope of Ishida’s career. In this excerpt from Alemani’s essay in the exhibition catalogue, she contextualizes Ishida’s paintings against the background of a fraught era in Japan’s history and investigates the work’s enduring relevance in our own time.
Jennifer Guidi: Mountain Range
In this video, produced by Château La Coste, Jennifer Guidi discusses her latest solo exhibition, Mountain Range, conceived in response to the architecture of Château La Coste’s Richard Rogers Gallery and the surrounding landscape of Provence in the South of France. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with Gagosien, is now on view through September 3, 2023.
